Meal Ministry

A dear friend with her new baby…I was blessed to cook lunch for her 🙂
As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.
1 Peter 4:10
Hi Ladies.. I would like to show you a window into my meal ministry…this is what I do for families who are in need of a meal, can’t cook for themselves, or have just had a baby. I also feel called to share God’s love randomly with those who just need a pick me up- I am so blessed.
I prepared this meal yesterday for a family who just had their second baby. Amidst the sleepless nights, nursing, and diaper changing…what sweet relief it is for a mother with a newborn to have dinner delivered..
Rolls Rising
Making broth for chicken n dumplings
A simple Italian tossed salad
Cream Puff Dessert (see womenlivingwell.org for the recipe this Friday!)
Starting to make green beans….
Packing everything up!
A little “plug in” for the blog..haha. My sweet cousin Jen made these for me for Christmas
A card!
I always, always, always make the same meal I make for others for my own family. They do NOT get my leftovers.  God, husband, children, then friends/ministry…Thank you Lord for laying that out for me and giving me grace!

I would love to post YOUR pictures/story of your meal ministry!
PLEASE e-mail me at JMNehrenz@me.com
I am looking for ANY story that shares the love of God with others through food.
You do not have to have a blog.

Blessings to you my Friends,
Janelle

Tips for YOUR Meal Ministry

  • For new moms (nursing)- stick with foods that are easy on the stomach-stay away from anything  spicy.
  • Aim for a meat, a carbohydrate, and a vegetable. You may also add a salad, roll and dessert if you wish.
  • Add a card to make it personal.
  • label food items.
  • Use throw away containers so the receiver does not have to return dishes to you.
  • I recommend the site Take Them a Meal -it helps coordinates meals for people who need them!

You are amazing. Many people share meals occasionally; you, however, do it routinely. Thank you for sharing your love and your gift with others. The photos really inspire and encourage others to consider doing the same.

Have you hear of the website "Take Them a Meal"? It's in my post here:

    http://organizingmadefun.blogspot.com/2010/08/organizing-meals-for-friend-in-need.html

I have found this one of the best ways to get meals for families at church. It's super easy and it even sends a reminder to the person through email. Please go see it…it's really great!

  5. ooooooooh I would love to see recipes. I always make this chicken and broccoli casserole and need a change. 😉 I have the chicken and dumplings one, but are the others already posted?

  6. Becky @ From Ministry to Motherhood says:

I love this idea and will pass it along to people at our Church. They are looking for ways to mark milestones and this would be a perfect way to do that!

    Thank you for this!

Looks super yummy.Giving a meal is fun & even my 3 year old enjoys getting involved. Have you shared the roll recipe? I didn't see it, but I could have missed it.

  8. Janelle Nehrenz says:

Hi Becky! Yes, I love that site..I mentioned it above! I have tried others, but it is my favorite too! I could use you girl…my closets are a mess upstairs! lol. Christy..quick chicken n dumplings and baked caramel apples are at http://www.womenlivingwell.org …I actually made my own broth the other day so the recipe for chicken n D looks different than the one I shared. I will be posting the dessert this Friday! Nunnallys- I actually use Rhodes frozen dinner rolls- I put 2 each in a muffin tin and let them rise during the day and bake for 15 mins- they are amazing, especially with butter and apple butter!

I love to take meals to friends – however I always feel anxiety that it will not taste good! I would love for you to share other easy meals that you have used in your ministry. Thanks – I love your info!

  10. Our church has a wonderful meal ministry. Two gals take this ministry on full time and we have had so many babies and other meal needs over the past couple years it is truly a full time ministry. Our church always provides two weeks worth of meals for new moms. It is such a blessing to not have to worry about dinner for two weeks! I remember when I had my 3rd baby almost 10 years ago, one of the dear ladies who brought my dinner also brought brown bag lunches for my two older kids for the next day complete with juice boxes. They were thrilled! I try and do this also when I can because it made my little ones feel so special. Several of the younger moms will now watch out for cues from other frustrated moms and surprise them with dinner just when they need it. Food can be such a ministry tool.

  11. This looks amazing! Last week I brought a meal to a friend. I used your idea of having a baked potato bar. I put it all in a box and delivered to them…potatoes already wrapped in foil and all the toppings. They LOVED it. You would have thought I'd brought them lobster! It's such a fun idea. And last year I purchased a bunt pan that has hearts on the top, and I love making bunt cakes to bring people, with the hearts on the top. It lets them know they are loved!!! <3 I use your site all the time now, girl friend!

  12. New reader–just made my first of your recipes today, the ham and cheese calzone from Women Living Well a few weeks ago, and it was delicious! My family gobbled it up and I have plenty of leftovers. Thank you!

Gina- How awesome is that…thank you for sharing :)Amy, what a wonderful church you have, such a blessing!!!!! Sarah, you are welcome! Thanks for posting!! Melisa, do you know that I STILL have anxiety over how my food will taste?! I am a fairly confident cook and I always second guess myself! Just lean on the Lord and borrow His confidence…that is all I do..every day of my life. 🙂 You can always pick up a pre-roasted chicken and make your own sides/dessert..semi-homemade is nothing to be ashamed of..it is the love from God that you give others that matters most. Love to you! Janelle

  14. Wow! What a wonderful idea! It is not a common thing to do around here (Germany) – don't ask me why… But sure something to think about and start over!!!

  15. Janelle Nehrenz says:

Katja, the perfect opportunity for you to be a LIGHT! YEA!!!!! If you do this, I want photos…I bet the facial expressions of your receiver would be priceless 🙂 lol..have a great day my friend, Love, Janelle

    Thank you Heather! Wohoo!

  19. This is a very nice blog! I am a birth doula and would love to take meals when I do follow-up visits with new moms. However — I'm a vegetarian, and most people aren't… so I never know what PEOPLE eat, or what will reheat well, or how to cook it for that matter!

I also wanted to start doing this for folks at my church, and I hope I can use this to get motivated, as well as to get ideas for myself and others.

And living in Pittsburgh, I always enjoy seeing Giant Eagle labels on blogs! 🙂

  20. Wow, what a wonderful ministry! I must say everything looks amazing! And I am REALLY interested in that green bean recipe! 🙂

A woman from a Bible study reminded me about preparing the same meal for my family as I make for others – that's important to remember. My husband, four children, and I recently hosted a birthday party for our neighbor who turned 86. We invited him, his wife, another neighbor who was recently widowed, and my parents, who are not believers, over for dinner. Next weekend we will be throwing a luncheon birthday party for another woman in her 80's from our church. She was never married and only has a sister-in-law left. We've invited some of her friends from church to join us. What a blessing it is to be able to serve them!

  22. Janelle Nehrenz says:

Karen-How thoughtful of you to think about special patients…I am sure that a vegetarian pasta would be sooo appreciated!!!! Keep me posted! Kathryn..thank you so much! Anonym- Love that about you…keep up the amazing hospitality…that surely is your gift from God! Wohoo!

I am super excited to ask our pastor if I could start a meal ministry at our church. How would I go about doing this? Would I need to make all the meals, or just coordinate it all. Most of the families at our church are big families, with 7+ kids, what are some meal ideas that wouldn't be to expensive for a big family plus enough to feed my family, so at least 12 people? Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful idea! Maybe you are the one that plants this seed in so many of us, just like the Boston show clerk 🙂 -Jennifer

  24. Janelle Nehrenz says:

Hi Jennifer! You would be the coordinator and make meals when you felt led. takethemameal.com helps coordinate meals for families very easily. Make yourself known at church as the meal coordinator by introducing yourself as such one sunday morning during service and have your name in contact info in the fliers! Anytime someone needs a meal they would contact you, then you can send out a mass e-mail to let people know to go to the take them a meal site to sign up when/if they can. It is also nice to have a group of ladies willing to be called upon on a regular basis! I am so happy for you Jennifer…you will be so blessed and bless others! Keep me posted and e-mail me JMNehrenz@me.com for more help or advice-or to be blogged about 🙂 lol
