How to make homemade Frappuccinos

Hi Ladies!

This weekend we were all smiles in Ohio….there was a heat wave! Yep, you heard it..the sun made an appearance and it went up to {a whopping} 60 degrees! My neighbors were walking their dogs, we had our windows open for fresh air, friends posted pictures of their families at the park. It’s been a long winter, haha.

One Facebook update that made me smile was from my sweet friend Megan who works at Starbucks. She quoted “I just can’t make any more Frappuccinos. I just can’t.” Bless her heart- with the beautiful weather came thirsty customers in the mood for an ice cold Summery treat.

I remember my dear friend Courtney, from Women Living Well having posted a “copy cat” recipe for this delightful drink. What a timely treat for the turning of the season! YUMMMmmmm!!!!

* I have known people to be very judgmental towards certain establishments. Thank you so much for choosing to fault on the side of righteousness and sharing God’s love rather than judging. Loving is the greatest power we have through Jesus Christ- Matt 22:36-40.

Courtney shares:

This is my FAVORITE Starbucks drink! There can be 10 inches of snow on the ground and I still crave this icy drink! But we all know that these little Starbucks drinks are $4 a pop! So I was DELIGHTED to find that my oldest sister, Kristen, has discovered how to make these at home – bless her heart! This is what older sisters are for right? lol!

Last week, while the kids swam at her house – she whipped one up (actually two and she offered me thirds but who’s counting right?) and it was delicious!!! Here’s the recipe:

Starbucks Mocha Frappuccino

3/4 cup double-strength coffee

3 tablespoons granulated sugar

1 cup low-fat milk

2 cups ice

3 Tbls. Hershey’s Chocolate

Optional:

3 Tbs whipped cream

Trade chocolate syrup for caramel copping to make a Caramel Frappuccino

Directions:

Make double-strength coffee by brewing with twice the coffee required by your coffee maker (that should be 2 tablespoons of ground coffee per each cup of coffee). Chill before using.

Then combine all the ingredients in a blender and blend on high speed until ice is crushed and drink is smooth. Pour into two 16-ounce glasses, and serve with a straw.

MOCHA Version:

For this version, add 3 tablespoons Hershey’s chocolate syrup to the original recipe and prepare as described. Top each glass with whipped cream, if desired.

CARAMEL Version:

For this version, add 3 tablespoons of caramel topping to the original recipe and prepare as described. Top each glass with whipped cream and drizzle additional caramel over the whipped cream.

If you have one of these going in the blender you must invite me over – cause there’s enough for two you know? Enjoy!

Thank you Courtney!!!!

  1. Awesome! I haven’t had one in years because they are so expensive. I will be trying this out! Thanks!

  2. Here in MA we don’t have too many Starbucks. A lot of folks don’t like how strong it is, my husband loves expresso but says Starbucks taste like dirt to him…LOL! We have Dunkin’ Donuts out here–which you may not care for since the coffee is not as strong. What Dunkin’s makes similar to the frappuccino is the coolata. I only splurge here or there in summertime:-) But making them in the Vitamix would be a great idea!

  3. May I please share this on our face book page for our church? It is For Whosoever Will Ministries. This is awesome way to make our favorite frappuccinos! Thank you so much, now to replace our blender…. 🙂

    • Absolutely!

      • Thank you! I am so excited to share these. May I share more.of your recipes by linking your page to our Facebook ministry status?

        • I hope you don’t ask every blogger/website author for permission to share their content.

          A. Why WOULDN’T they want you to share their blog unless it was a top secret, password protected, members only blog? Bloggers want readers. The more readers they have the more money they can possibly make or simply just a personal pleasure that they aren’t writing for a ghost. Duh.

          B. This is the internet. Anything posted on the internet in an open space is F-R-E-E. It’s not like you are infringing some copyright by sharing this. Would I have to ask CNN.com if I could share an article of theirs? OF COURSE NOT! It’s PUBLIC. And there are entire websites DEDICATED to sharing internet content that they didn’t produce. Digg.com and Reddit.com are two big ones. They don’t go asking for permission every time they share an article.

Please don’t ask anybody that again. It’s the internet. The ENTIRE point of the internet is SHARING. Why do you think Facebook and Twitter are so successful? Because it’s all about SHARING. The only NO NO is if you posted this on facebook claiming it was YOUR recipe or if you copy and pasted an article and said YOU wrote it.

          • Dear Charles,
I thought it was very polite of her and there was no harm done….thank you, Jen! Charles, you seemed triggered by this somehow. She was not being argumentative.

        • Of course you can!

  4. Oh, I have got to make this soon!!!! It will meet all my coffee and chocolate cravings!! 🙂
    Blessings,
    Leslie

  5. I love this recipe!!! Used it all summer last year! Thank you for sharing it with all of us 🙂

  6. Yummy, can’t wait to try this one out! Thanks for sharing sis!

    Blessings,

  8. Jennifer says:

Trying this out later today! I’m tired of the Starbucks prices (: thanks for sharing

  9. How would i make the Coffee Frapp with Vanilla syrup?

    • brew your coffee a bit stronger (like 2.5 T/C or 3 T/cup. just make it extra strong. and i would use a dark roast.) and substitute in your vanilla syrup. (dont use vanilla extract. use actual vanilla syrup)

  10. I made some today. It tasted great, but frothed up like a mad dog. How do I kill the froth?

  11. FrappsForever says:

Just tried this recipe – or there abouts.

I mixed a shot of caramel espresso with a shot of hazelnut espresso and added a lil water to make up 3/4 of a cup. Left to chill. Then…

    1 pint of semi-skimmed cow’s milk
2 teaspoons of vanilla infused caster sugar
    12 large ice cubes
    pre-cooled 3/4 cup of coffee

Straight in blender, 20 seconds on ‘ice crush’ mode, poured into a tumbler and add a straw.

    Delicious! 🙂

  12. FrappsForever says:

Oops! Ps add 2 tbsp of Askey’s chocolate sauce to the blender for a moccha!

  13. I just made one with haagen Dazs ice cream instead of milk and starbucks mocha iced coffee that you can buy at walmart in a carton instead of the coffee. It was pretty good. Thanks for the recipe.

  14. To me, it still tastes delicious with regular strength coffee, if you’re having to work with whatever is the pot that morning. Such a great recipe!

  15. what kind of mixer do you use?

  16. RAMTIN AMIRI says:

    this was so good

  17. Just tried this and it’s wonderful! Tastes just like the real thing. Now everytime I make one, I will put 5 dollars in a jar. Maybe I can save enough to take my family on vacation! Thank you!

  18. Just made this and although it tastes great it’s nowhere near the thick consistency of a frappaccino. Could I have done something wrong?

  19. Kitchen Gardner says:

Thank you for this amazing recipe….I tried it and my sons loved it….very authentic! I posted the photo in Instagram!

  20. Frappacinos are my favourite drink! However, I live in Britain so I cant make these with Hershy’s Chocolate Syrup, but I have some Green And Blacks Cocoa Powder (which is an unsweetened dark chocolate cocoa powder) on hand, would I need to make any changes to the recipe to keep it sweet?

  21. P. Stas Kacicki says:

thank you cant wait to try it, but i like the 3rd topping the best one of all that beautiful scripture you used, that was the topping of the day ,,,,God Bless You and you family in Jesus Name,,,,,,,,,

  22. Maddie Rhoton says:

Just made the Caramel one! Can’t wait to try it tomorrow morning.. Can’t now. Double strength coffee = I wouldn’t get ANY sleep!!

  23. THANK you! I love mocha fraps from starbucks but it is such a high cost. This will make it easy to have a frap now, when I want, without putting a hurting to the budget. Plus a friend just gave me a homemade chocolate syrup recipe!

  24. this is a brilliant recipe!!! I adapted it using my nespresso machine and came out beautifully!!

  25. Amazzzzzing!!! I am a coffee addict and this worked perfectly in the summer!

  26. my my I wake up with moco frappaccino on my mind, and starbuck is right across the street, I spend my last $5 to get me one, now I can make my own, I thank you so much. You have saved me lots of money…..

  27. Anber Iqbal says:

Even though it’s freezing out, I still can’t resist a cold drink! Just made this for me and my sister, and can honestly say it tasted so similar to the Starbucks Mocha Frappe! Thanks a bunch!! xx

  28. Since getting my wisdom teeth removed I haven’t been able to have hot coffee or many other caffeine drinks. This recipe is great and definitely helps meet my coffee and ‘cold food only’ needs. Thanks!

  29. Yumm sounds delish! I’m going to be making some soon I have my cup of coffee cooling in the fridge . Thanks for the recipe. 🙂

  30. Dreams do come true(:
Thank you so much. I will be making these alllll the time now. 😀

  31. We made the caramel this morning but had to use regular coffee because it was already brewed… It was. Amazing! Absolutely almost identical to the SBs version but probably a third of the price. Made 2 generous servings. I’d probably do less sugar for the caramel version, though, or leave it out since my caramel sauce was so sweet. Thanks for the awesome recipe!!

  32. I found myself penniless, but my cupboard’s abound. I wanted a frappe, and here’s what I found!

Thanks for this tasty treat ! It has brightened my family’s day!!

    :)!

  33. I love making lattes but Im getting tired of the hot ones. This sounds so good! Im definately going to make one for me and my Mom tonight she loves them too. Soon I’ll be making them for everyone in the family. I don’t mind…. Spread the love!

  34. Hi, I’ve been wanting to make home made caramel Frappuccino without having to go to Starbucks and I was wondering if I need to add 3/4 cup of coffee grounds or do I need to mix it in with hot water first, let it cool in the refrigerator, and then add it to the blender? Thank you for your help.

  35. I will need to give this recipe a try, thanks for taking the time to post it :o), I took a stab at making my own Starbucks cold coffee based that is used to make both the Mocha / Caramel Frappuccino, I think it tastes better than Starbucks lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVp0J9l1UQQ

  36. Recently finding out I have allergies to dairy AND soy, I thought my frappuccino days were over. I made this at home with almond milk and it tasted IDENTICAL to a frappuccino. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

  37. I freeze coffee in popsicle molds. Pop them in a blender with cold coffee and hazelnut and chocolate syrup.

  38. Seal Lover says:

Thanks so much for this wonderful treat! Just a quick question, how do you thicken up the drink without making it too icy/ watery? Any idea? Thanks.
    LULU

  39. I love it i do it all the time 🙂

  40. Frappuccinos are a huge favorite in our house. We made a batch with espresso and 2% milk. Husband said it is almost as good as Starbucks and I haven’t heard a complaint from my 12 year old daughter 🙂 We were very pleased how it turned out. Next time I plan on using chocolate almond milk.

  41. Samyra D. says:

This was great, made it once I saw it, my sister and I loved it!

  42. Carolyn says:

I loved this! You know how all these young teens just gotta have their starbucks! Except it doesnt have the starbucks pricetag and homemade is the best made! Huge plus… Made it with vanilla creamer and vanilla extract for a vanilla frapp… Still awesome : )

  43. your recipe is wrong on one point…

Starbucks uses SPLENDA to sweeten the fraps
and it makes all the difference in the world (as far as copying the recipe)

  44. I used a Starbucks Via Veranda + 1 cup cold water = 3/4 double strength coffee and 3 T cocoa powder + 3 T sugar = chocolate syrup. It is fantastic. I am drinking it now. It is better than my Starbucks makes because I blended it smooth in my VitaMix. They leave it with little crunchy ice chunks. Thank you so very much for this! Cheers to a fun and frugal frapptaculous summer! Yea!!!

  45. Adrienne says:

This taste just like the frapps u buy at Starbucks and Tim hortons! I am making this from now on instead of buying at those coffee places!! YUM!!!! Thanks!!!

  46. I absolutely HEART this!!! Here in Merrie Olde England, where I live, those darn Starbucks things are about £3. And last summer, the mercury topped 100F (!!!!) for about six weeks in and around Oxfordshire, if you can believe that. It’s only about 70F now, but we Brits love any excuse to pretend it’s hot. Thanks for this one, Janelle, I have been trying and failing to make these at home for ages. I’m so thankful for my £10 blender right now 🙂

  47. Goldie Small says:

I just made this for myself!! Very easy and tastes better than Starbuck!! Drizzled caramel and chocolate into chilled wine glasses before pouring. EXCELLENT!

  48. May I know what kind of blender you use? The one in the picture looks so neat 😀 Thank you!!

  49. My daughter and I just made this. I am a Starbucks fanatic and this just as good! We substitued the sugar with an all natural sweetener with no calories like Stevia in the raw and used skim milk instead of low-fat because that is what we had on hand. We also used dark chocolate Hershey syrup. Thank you for sharing! This is going to save us lots of money this summer.

  50. jingmin says:

    how many calories ?

  51. LOVED this!! Tastes the same and is so much cheaper, thanks so much! P.s. Do you have any tip of how to reduce the froth?

  52. Is there a particular coffee blend or brand that you use? I don’t drink coffee, however I love Starbuck’s Mocha Fraps and want to try this recipe. Anything to save money!! Thanks.

  53. I tryed you recipe and I used the exact ingredients and ALL the coffee went to the bottom and I tryed it again but in a diffent suger and the same thing happened I am very sad 🙁 I was hopeing this would work nothing personal but this didn’t work but could you please tell me if there is someone else that has something that works ? Please thx

  54. Thanks for sharing!
I just made sime Mocha Frappuccinos very good, my girls (teens) loved them, but my favorite is the Caramel one, I don’t have caramel, but I plan to go buy some later…..Yummmm.
    Thanks again. 🙂

  55. Thx! Great success! Just what I needed on a hot sleppy afternoon. 🙂

Had no chocolate so I just went with strong coffee (freshly ground espresso beans, brewed in a coffee maker) ice cubes, cream and sugar …in a blender. Soooo good!

  56. TucsonMikal72 says:

I just discovered this recipe…thank you!!! I drink café vanilla frappys all summer long and they add up quickly! Now I won’t have to go back to Starbucks until October when they get their Pumpkin Spice Lattés in! 🙂

  57. TucsonMikal72 says:

PS>>>I added about 1/4 cup of Classic Vanilla Coffee Mate creamer to mine.

  58. Thank you! I have made so many copy cat recipes for frappes, i was a little leary when i googled it (again) this morning in an attempt to find a recipe that finally worked!

Yours DID! So funny, I worked as a bartender, have worked in a coffee shop, but have never been able to reproduce frappes at home (and I even have a vitamix!) until now! Your proportions must be perfect, this texture is RIGHT ON.

My quality of life may have just gone up a little bit. Here in MX, there are for sure Starbucks but none in my neighborhood and I cant drive 20 minutes one way to just get a coffee! Never, ind the cost 😉 thanks again!

  59. It depends. If you are home and want to have a frappuccino, driving to a Starbucks to bring one home will probably take much longer than 10 minutes.

  60. I just made this, but it did not come out slushy/thick, but a water consistency. I followed the directions perfectly. What am I doing wrong??

  61. Thanks for posting this Janelle. I just made it and am thoroughly enjoying, as it is my usual Starbucks purchase (yay ~ so much cheaper!) I cut the sugar and syrup in half, and still think it is delicious. Happy Spring! Liz in VA

  62. Darla Jaramillo says:

My husband loved this recipe, they are his favorite coffee drink but he rarely gets to indulge because of the high sugar. With your recipe, I was able to substitute Splenda for the sugar and low sugar chocolate topping and he was thrilled. Thank you

  63. hay.. my name is salim am 19 years old i love cooking (but not gay) and i pretty much know how to cook and all etc…. but the one thing that i never understood … what is (strength coffee)??! .. i know that its a stupid question but i live in dubai so …..

  64. Yummy, Yummy. This is within my price range.

  65. Hi Salim! Coffee strength is just the amount of coffee per water- if you have less water and more coffee it will have a stronger taste- more robust? Does that make sense?
