Homemade Hot Cocoa

There is nothing more comforting on a cool day than to walk into a nice warm home and be welcomed with a cup of homemade hot cocoa. This is a special treat I make for my children and my neighbors. It is simple and can be kept warm in the Crockpot. This recipe combines cocoa with chocolate chips to make it extra chocolaty. I also add 1 container of cool whip to make it extra creamy.

Milk, cocoa, chocolate chips, hot water, vanilla, cinnamon, sugar and salt
In a med/large pot on the stove (med-high heat) pour in your hot water with sugar, cocoa powder, and salt-whisk well.
Add chocolate chips and whisk well until melted.
Add milk, vanilla, and cinnamon and whisk well.
Add an 8 oz container of cool whip- this makes it very creamy!!!
Transfer into a Crockpot on the lowest heat to keep warm.
When ready to serve, top with whipped cream or marshmallows. Ahhhhh….this is not your instant cocoa mix, my friends!  This is a REAL treat….mmMMM….Enjoy!

  1. Janelle, this sounds wonderful, but could you substitute real whipped cream for the cool whip (always been afraid of what's in cool whip;-) or would it curdle do you think? Thanks and blessings,
    Suzanne

Suzanne-you absolutely may substitute real whipped cream! My husband and I went to a very nice restaurant a few years back. I ordered coffee with cream..and out came coffee with a side of homemade whipped cream! I didn't know what to do with it! I asked, and the waiter told me…add it in your coffee of course!? So, I did and It was wonderful-ever since, it has been my thing to do with hot drinks. Enjoy!

Visitng from Courtney's site – thanks for the recipe! I usually make homemade hot cocoa on the stove top. Never thought to transfer it to my crockpot to keep it warm. Can't wait to try this!

    Janelle,

Thanks for the recipe. I own a crockpot (wedding gift from nine years ago) and hot chocolate is the only thing I've ever made in it. I am going to try your recipe and also make your crockpot apple sauce recipe w/my children this week because we are studying apples for our science/nature study.

WHK-It is such an inviting drink to walk in the door to on a cold day..just make sure to put it on the lowest possible setting… It will be delicious! M&H-what a fun mom! I did the same with my little girl…it is amazingly simple and oooohhh so good. I wish I had some right now!! lol

  10. That looks simply divine. I can't wait to make this for my family one night 🙂 Thanks Janelle 🙂

What a wonderful recipe! I've never made homemade hot chocolate, but with temps falling this week I think I will give it a try. I love your blog and all of the delicious (and relatively easy) recipes. 🙂 Lana

  12. Janelle Nehrenz says:

Thanks Chels! (I see you are a fellow foodie..wohoo! I will have to try out your broc cheese soup!) Lana-thank you for the encouragement! Right now, the poll says quick and easy wins the race! Sounds good to me too!

  13. I saw this on Courtney's site….sounds delicious!!! I am looking forward to making this very soon. Thanks for sharing!

  14. I make hot cocoa but mine doesn't use chocolate chips…probably makes it a little less chocolaty? Anyway, this might sound dumb, but I never thought of using a crock pot to keep it warm. What a great idea! I'll have to try that when we go caroling this winter.

  15. Hi Janelle–saw the link on Courtney's page and thought I'd check it out! Love the recipe and I think I'll try it tonight! Just curious, do you use regular semi sweet chocolate chips or milk chocolate? Does it matter? Thanks for a great idea to keep us warm these chilly fall evenings!

  16. Janelle Nehrenz says:

Hi Sharon! Use any chocolate chips you like…a milk chocolate will be more mild and semi-sweet will be rich..I have never met a chocolate I didn't like, lol. Enjoy!

  17. I'm actually not really into hot cocoa, but this sounds like a really good recipe, thanks for sharing! 🙂

  18. This sounds so yummy. Can you make the whole thing in the crock pot? Thanks for sharing.
    Leslie

  19. Janelle Nehrenz says:

Hi Leslie! I would not recommend making it in the Crockpot only because I have not tried it that way. I would fear that it wouldn't melt together properly and wouldn't have the smooth/creamy consistency…and I wouldn't want you to miss out on THAT! lol!!! Enjoy, my friend ~Janelle

Sounds Wonderful! Do you put only the first few ingredients in the crock-pot? Then add the additional ingredients when you're about to serve it? ~Christy

  22. Janelle Nehrenz says:

Hi 17! This is a stovetop recipe, then once it is prepared just pour it into your slowcooker to keep warm! Enjoy!

  27. Are you using Dark Chocolate Cocoa? It looks like it in the picture, but I just wanted to make sure :))

  28. I am just wondering why mine tastes so bitter. I used Cocoa Powder, but it is the unsweetened kind. Could that be the problem?
