Who do I cook for? {Meal Ministry}

{A meal I made for a friend who had surgery. Above- Green beans, Mashed Redskins, Meatloaf}

The other day I received an e-mail asking me who I cook for.

It’s funny…but I just sat there thinking “Who DO I cook for?” I mean, I don’t have a specific plan..organization…purpose, etc. Who do I cook for…

And I started day dreaming about the meals I’ve made, and the places I’ve taken them, and the people, and the situations, and the prayers….

Here is who I have cooked for:

  • My family. Of course, this is my first ministry. My immediate family and my extended family get my love first ;)We’ve made a lot of great memories around that dinning room table.
  • Friends. Coming together in fellowship is so important…it’s nice to have an open home and a meal for friends.
  • Our Adult Bible Fellowship. Bringing in breakfast treats on Sunday mornings.
  • Bible Studies. There is comfort in the Lord, fellowship, and gathering around the table with snacks. It’s a blessing.
  • The man with Multiple Sclerosis. He was a married businessman at one time ,but lost it all…his wife, job, and most saddening… his ability to walk or feel anything from the waist down. He ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches every day, 3 meals a day. The bread could be frozen and the peanut butter and jelly stayed for a while…going grocery shopping was not easy and couldn’t be done on his own. Cooking was also difficult. My heart broke for him and so I made and took him dinner for a year.
  • The man with Muscular Dystrophy. He wears a constant smile even though his body is breaking down. His mom lives with him and he cares for her….she had a heart attack, but was able to come home. Surely they deserved some wedding soup.
  • The widower. He lost the love of his life after 50 years of marriage. She always cooked amazing meals and he really missed that. Something comforting about a home cooked meal. I couldn’t replace her cooking, but I could spare a warm plate of food to remind him of God’s love.
  • Many new moms. What a miraculous time in life! But, it is also stressful…sleepless nights, nursing, uncomfortably juggling new responsibilites. Not having to worry about dinner time is just so helpful.
  • The countless people who’ve had surgeries or are struggling with a chronic illness. I can’t imagine how hard it is to add hospital visits, the weight of health issues, and extra needed time to a normal busy schedule. Dinner delivered is a blessing.
  • The family who’s father/husband was in a car accident. They were trying to make life as normal as they could while he healed….Mom was tired. This was a huge help.
  • The New Members/Guests at church. I get so excited to see what God is doing for our church and for our community. It is a HUGE blessing to cook for the new families and get to know them over lunch.
  • Special events {Beautified} – When there’s an opportunity to serve for the Lord, I am on it. When it’s His will- it is always a blast.
  • Neighbors. I’ve been known to randomly knock on a door or two with dessert in hand… they are kind enough to put up with my outdoor cat in their bushes, lol-they deserve a treat every now and again!!! Have I told you ladies how blessed we are with our neighbors? Seriously…we are surrounded by awesome families. It’s been an amazing 8 years here.
  • Clients. My husband and I appreciate the business our clients give us. They are a tremendous blessing and what bring in money for our livelihood and my ministry.
  • Children. The kids on the baseball team, school, football, at school, and in the neighborhood. I want to be “that mom”.

{If I am making a meal for a family, I try to add an additional kid friendly meal…This meal is sure to bring a smile!}

I feel as though I could go on and on remembering who God has led me to cook for, when, for what reason, etc. But the most important thing to know about this meal ministry is that it truly is ALL from Him. He has transformed me into a vessel to carry out His work – I am just a willing participant. I would never have the means to carry this out without God, nor would I get the enjoyment out of it if it weren’t from Him. It’s a small ministry in comparison to others…but it’s what God has called me to do and I am so thankful.

I pray that you will also be the branches that reach out to those around you {which is why I blog}! So many of you have e-mailed me with amazing stories of how you’ve started your own meal ministry! It is so encouraging and strengthens MY faith when I read these endearing letters. Thank you for thinking of me and taking the torch! May God bless you all abundantly. If I could cook for every one of you, you better believe I WOULD!

“God doesn’t call on the qualified, he qualifies who He calls upon”

I always purchase inexpensive/throwaway containers so the people I cook for do not have to return anything to me {or wash anything}. They are a fraction of the price at your local dollar stores as opposed to your grocery story! Marcs carries “real” containers that are less expensive than the throw-aways at the grocery store!

Can’t forget dessert! {Especially for those new moms! They are burning way too many calories nursing, lol}

Who have YOU cooked for?!

    Just loved this “Who do U cook for?” article… I too would love to do it and I try my best too.. Specially while we are out with friends or with friends who are in trouble… But sometimes it makes me sad cos we mostly end up with inconsiderate friends who come just for the food and we dont see the help happening when we need one! It’s a one-income family here and we ourselves are most of the time on low-budget meals… What do we do specially when we want to give and don’t have much in hand? On the other hand, I keep thanking God for certain other friends, who walk in with a packed meal or pizzas just to share the beautiful fellowship! And a certain bachelor whom i love to cook for specially, cos he is a great help to all around specially our church… He repays back by taking us out for expensive dinners once in a while!!!! But the most thing happening, happens with the first kind that I mentioned!!!!!! We all belong to the same ‘gang’!!!!!

    • That is so great you have a heart for this ministry Elizabeth- remember our treasures are in heaven and as long as we are obedient to him, it doesn’t matter who repays us here 😉 If it is your calling, you will get such a reward from it!!! Blessing and love going out to you!

  2. I loved this!!! It is an absolute priviledge to be able to use what God has blessed us with…and He gives us such pleasure in what He has gifted us with…no matter how small and insignificant we may sometimes feel. “I believe God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast. 3. GREAT post Nelle!!! I love how you serve the Lord with your hands – just like the Proverbs 31 woman!!! You have beautiful hands!!

  4. Janelle..I .was so blessed to read your post today. The joy with which you serve is always evident in the entries that you share. I have been a regular contributer to God’s Kitchen in my area. It is an outreach of a local church in my area that provides a Thursday evening meal to anyone, no questions asked. I have regularly volunteered once a month to be one of two individuals who prepare dessert, enough to feed 30 people. I have enjoyed decorating ‘themed’ cupcakes that coincide with a holiday or season for the week I volunteer. Thank you for the inspiration you provide that encourages me to seek opportunities to minister beyond my own front door. I have been seeking the Lord to help me to bloom where I am planted. My children are middle school and high school age and I find myself asking ‘what now Lord?’ after placing them in public school following seven years of homeschooling. Your post today has encouraged me to ask the Lord to guide me to needs beyond my own front door. God Bless You!

  5. I don’t know if I’ve ever taken the time to stop and say “hello”! I found you when I googled something along the lines of “meal ministry” awhile back. So glad that God led me here…it’s something that God has called me to and I find great joy in fixing meals for others.
    What a blessing your site is to me~
    Thank you for pointing others to Jesus in this very practical way of helping them out…love to hear about it!

  6. I love to cook for others! I cook for family, friends, neighbors, church members, and even strangers sometimes. I haven’t been using this blessing of cooking very much lately so maybe it is time to get back at it. Thanks for the post!

  7. Such a great post! I really enjoy following your blog and seeing all the things the Lord does through you and your family.

    I LOVE meatloaf…and it wouldn’t be a meatloaf dinner without greanbeans and mashed potatoes…LOL!

    I was “complaining” to the Lord about not being able to “cook” for others (long story) – and you know what He did…he opened up the door for me to NOT cook but to clean – and I think I love to clean almost as much as I love to cook and bake! I’m so glad I can serve in this way – it is such a blessing to me and my daughter who I bring with me.

    Blessings to you!

    • Oooo Dory!!!! That is AWESOME! I know that I certainly always appreciate the people willing to help clean up at the church…it is a HUGE ministry and help. After planning, grocery shopping, hauling, cooking, serving, etc- at the end of the night I am beat. It is such a blessing to have help with cleaning up. Thanks for sharing that! It truly is just as important and needed!!!!

  8. Great article! There are so many people in need of meals, it is just a matter of looking around and thinking “how can I be used of God to bless them?”. I have been married to my pastor/husband for 35 years and have probably prepared thousands of meals for others and with the Lord’s blessing, I look forward to the next 35 years of encouraging others through the simple ministry of meals. Thank you for encouraging others in this joyful privilege!

  9. Hi Janelle! I just love your site! One question about your meal ministry, maybe you’ve experienced this. Whenever I make something for someone else, even though I’m a planner and totally prepared, it’s always hard the day of…to make it (not really the hard part) but then to get it to the family or church and then get back to MY family and make them something. I, like you, have little ones and they are hungry when they are hungry, as you well know, so it’s hard for me to deliver food around dinner time and get home and feed MY crew. Unfortunately, I sometimes end up at a drive-thru or take-out for my family whenever I make for another family! How do you handle this? Thanks so much for your ministry!

    • Sara- yes, I do know what you mean! Thankfully we live in the suburbs and most of the people Ive delivered meal to are quite close. I just double my recipes- one batch goes to my family, than the other to the other family. I also prep cook in the morning when the children are eating breakfast. For example, cut up the veggies, make the salad/dessert, etc. I typically deliver meals around 5 and I am back by 5:45 for my own family to eat by 6:00. I put burners on low and cover pots with lids..or I put the oven on the lowest setting to keep casseroles warm, etc. I do take my children with me when I deliver meals…they take it very seriously and help me bring food in, it’s super cute 🙂 I should write a post about this, thanks for the idea!

    For a long time I have been asking God to show me how I can use my gifts to help others and it’s funny because before I read this any time I would hear of someone sick or just come home from the hospital I always had an urge to bring them food! Glad to know I’m not the only one! Just a few weeks ago I brought brownies to a friend who had just had a baby and she was so happy! She told me she had been craving brownies all that week! I never imagined something so simple would make someone so happy!

  11. I love your meal ministry section. We have a “Meals for New Moms” ministry at my chruch. I work at the church and school and live about 30 minutes away. I don’t have time to go home and cook a meal and bring it back. Any suggestions on make ahead meals that are easy for new moms and dads to heat up and good for young families? P.S. the meatloaf, mashed potatoes and greenbeans are a hit!
